The World Test Championship 2021-2023 cycle kicked off with the start of a marquee test series between India and England. The series has a total of five test matches played at different venues. It is of utmost importance as it’s the start of World Test Championship 2021-23 and two of the best cricket teams in the world are playing.
The series so far
First test match started on 4th August 2021. Trent bridge cricket ground in Nottingham hosted the first test match. Both teams showed tough fight on all days and day 5 was set to be an epic chase of 157 runs. However rain had other plans. The fifth and final day of the test match was completely washed out and the test match ended in a draw. This was a big disappointment for fans because it could have been a great test match.
The second test match was played at the home of cricket. The Lord’s test matches are always special. It’s a different feeling all together for the fans and players too. Indian openers continued to show their sublime form and made a lot of runs. KL Rahul scored a century and Rohit Sharma scored 83 runs. England captain Joe Root is in form of his life and scored 180 unbeaten runs in the first innings. It was very good batting wicket. On the final day, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami played important knocks to contribute crucial runs in the second innings. England required 270 runs in last 60 overs of the last day. And India bowled them out in 52 overs. It was a historic victory for India.
Injury scares England’s prospects in the series :
Before the start of the test series, Ben Stokes had already announced an indefinite break from cricket prioritising his mental health. We wish Ben Stokes good health and come back whenever he is ready. Jofra Archer was ruled out for the entire year due to shoulder injury.
After the first test match, Stuart Broad was also ruled out of the entire series due to injury. Now Mark Wood is likely to be rested for the next match citing injury scare. He is currently working with the doctors and finding out what’s best for him. With these many injuries, it has become very hard for England to give a fight to a very strong Indian team. The English batting is already in turmoil with only Joe Root carrying the team on his shoulders.
