India’s new head coach candidates

Team India’s current head coach Ravi Shastri’s contract is going to expire after the T20 World Cup this year. Shastri served as a team director for few years and then the head coach after that. Team India reached new heights in this period.

Under Virat Kohli’s leadership and Ravi Shastri’s guidance, India won a test series in Australia twice, once in South Africa and lead the England test series 2-1, which ended abruptly just few days ago. Team India managed to make it to the top four and top two in every ICC tournament under Ravi Shastri’s guidance.

Shastri to step down

Had Ravi Shastri wanted to continue as the head coach of team India, he could have done so by extending his contract. But he has decided not to extend the contract and retire from the coaching job. Shastri’s contract was earlier going to end after the ICC cricket World Cup 2019 but the BCCI extended it to 2021.

Ravi Shastri said “I believe, I have achieved all I wanted, 5 years number 1 in tests, series win twice in AUS, leading 2-1 in ENG, the way we played in Lord’s, Oval. We have beaten every country in their backyard in Limited-overs, T20 WC will be icing in the cake”.

Being the coach of Indian cricket team is a tough job and Ravi Shastri has done his job very well. He was a part of some very famous victories of team India like Gabba 2021 and the recent Lord’s test match.

Since Ravi Shastri has officially declared to give up the head coach job, it will be interesting to see what he does next. We all know and fans of Ravi Shastri’s commentry. It will be exciting to see Shastri back in the commentry box.

Who is the new head coach ??

BCCI will have to appoint a new coaching staff after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. It will be interesting to how things develop with times. Indian team hasn’t had a foreign coach since Duncan Fletcher’s tenure ended in 2015.

According to some reports, the candidates for the head coach position of India are Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman. There will be some more names coming up as time passes. Some foreign names are Mahela Jayawardene and Ricky Ponting. However Jayawardene had earlier stated that he has no interest in coaching a national team. He wants to continue coaching in different franchise leagues.
